Children of all ages have an inherent need to be able to read properly. The seeds for this ability are laid right from the time they have entered nurseries. Teachers at such places usually educate young children on how to start reading well.
However, there is a big difference between being able to read and being able to read in a critical manner. This is not something which is taught in most popular nursery and schools as yet. But it is a great skill which you should definitely give to your children. If you are wondering how you can help your child develop critical reading skills, here are some key steps.
5 Key Steps for Helping Your Child Develop Critical Reading Skills
Develop Their Attention Span
One of the most common things about children these days is that they lack attention. Whether this is because of ADHD or similar disorders to or simply not enough parental control in up for debate. In either case, if the child does not learn how to pay attention, they will not be able to read, let alone think critically. So, the first step is always to have them develop the ability to sustain attention. Start by using some very elementary games for them to focus their attention on. If you can engage them properly then you can help them develop the ability to sustain attention.

Help Them Visualize
Visualizing what they are reading is a great way for children to grasp at what is being said by the words. This is the main reason why books for young children contain pictures and other kinds of images. These are meant to help them imagine what is being said so that they can grasp at it easily. This is important as it will allow them to develop the ability to visualize the ideas and then analyze them later. Use popular picture books in the market and read along with your children. Explain how things are unfolding to them in simple terms and see if they can add their own unique ideas to it.
Help Them Reason
The worst kind of education is the one which only asks children to accept what is being taught without personal inquiry. The best kind of education is when the doubts and other misconceptions they have been systematically cleared. This is the first and foremost way for them to develop the ability to read and think critically. So, you need to explain the reason behind everything when they ask you and you also need to make sure their educators in school do the same.
Help Them Integrate
Critical reading is a process of understanding what is being read and then finding out if one agrees with the reasoning behind the ideas in the same moment. There can be a small gap between these two processes but the idea is to minimize this gap. The most proficient thinkers and professionals in any field are able to do this by default. If you want your kids to have a strong analytical mind, then you need to help them develop this two-sided ability.
Foster Healthy Competition
It is a well-known fact that children with siblings often turn out with better social skills than those without. In either case, you need to foster healthy competition so that your children can learn to learn from each other. This is a great faculty which requires the ability to read critically. It is a gateway to immense personal growth and should be encouraged since they are young.
